Lower Back Pain/Sciatica Q & A

low back pain

Many people have questions about lower back pain and sciatica for a chiropractor in Burke VA.

What causes sciatica or lower back pain?

Lower back pain can arise:

  • after irritation in the large nerve roots connecting the legs to the lower back
  • after irritation in the smaller nerves exiting the spine in the lower back
  • after straining the back muscles
  • due to degenerating intervertebral discs
  • because of damage to the ligaments, bones or joints

A true sciatica is caused by the piriformis muscle in the buttocks placing pressure on the sciatic nerve traveling down the back of the leg. This condition is very common during pregnancy due to the anterior tilt in the pelvis to accommodate a growing baby. If you are pregnant and experiencing low back pain, see Dr.Go for treatment options.

What is the difference between sciatica and sacroiliac dysfunction?

Many mistake a sacroiliac dysfunction for sciatica due to the overlapping symptoms. A true sciatica caused by irritation of the piriformis muscle can only happen in 20% of the population that have the sciatic nerve that pierces through the piriformis muscle. When sacroiliac dysfunction is present, the joint becomes hypomobile and can create irritation on the nerve roots leaving the sacral plexus.

This type of pain can occur strictly in the lower back region or radiate outward to other parts of the body.

When should I see a doctor about sciatica or lower back pain?

Three out of every four adults in this country experience lower back pain at some time in their life. Often, it resolves itself without treatment. However, if the pain is sharp, doesn’t improve, becomes chronic or worsens, a medical diagnosis and treatment should be sought promptly. Sharp lower back pain can indicate a severe structural or muscular issue that needs attention, such as a muscle or ligament sprain or tear.

How can chiropractic care help with sciatica or lower back pain?

Dr. Go may also take digital X-rays if needed.
