Do You Have Scoliosis?

chiropractic care for scoliosis

The chiropractor at Movement Chiropractic in Burke VA can help with scoliosis.

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. This term is used to characterize a sideways and unnatural curving of the spine. A spine with scoliosis may resemble the letter “C” or “S.” This condition typically starts to develop at the same time that an adolescent experiences a growth spurt prior to puberty. Scoliosis appears more commonly in girls than boys with a reported 10:1 ratio. There are several kinds of scoliosis. Functional scoliosis is caused by an abnormality elsewhere in the body, such as where one leg is shorter than the other. Structural scoliosis is linked to other diseases, syndromes, or birth defects.

How is scoliosis handled in children?

In America, about 2 percent to 3 percent of the population will suffer from scoliosis by age 16, making it a very common condition in children and adolescents. A parent, doctor or teacher may notice symptoms of scoliosis after noticing a child leaning to one side or having uneven shoulders or waist.

Any type of lateral deviation in the spine will put undue pressure on the nerve roots leaving the concavity of the spine. As a chiropractor, Dr. Go will work with you to fix and maintain your spine to ensure that the condition does not worsen. Treatments often involve dynamic stretching, specific asymmetrical strengthening, multi-angle adjusting, and restoring sagittal curves. For severe cases of scoliosis over 40 degrees, we will work as a team to determine the best course of treatment.

What treatments help with scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a major specialty area for Dr. James Go. As a chiropractic trained in structural correction, Dr. Go uses a very specific chiropractic treatment for people with scoliosis. Before undergoing any treatment, you will complete a physical exam designed especially for scoliosis. Based on the unique curve of your spine, Dr. Go will develop a plan of care that includes personalized physical therapy exercises, chiropractic adjustments, and balance training exercises.
